In the US, Old Orchard Brands has expanded its Healthy Balance line of reduced-sugar juice drinks to include two new tropical flavours, after new recommendations were made on the level of sugar consumption.
The new pineapple-orange and peach-mango varieties both fit within the US Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s dietary recommendation for the reduction of sugar intake, which found earlier this year that Americans’ sugar consumption was as much as 150% too high. It recommended that adult consumers lower their intake to 12 teaspoons per day.
Old Orchard Brands’ new variants contain 5g of sugar and just 20 calories in every 8oz serving. Sweetened with no-calorie sweetener, the juices “provide a full-flavoured experience without cutting corners on taste,” the brand claimed.
The new flavours will be made available in grocery stores across the US in ready-to-drink 64oz bottles, with a suggested retail price of $2.49.
Old Orchard consultant and health expert Amy Bragagnini said: “The new guidelines are clear. Americans are consuming far too much sugar. A single 20oz bottle of sugary cola is going to put you over the recommended sugar intake by nearly 40%, so you have to make smarter choices. Healthy Balance has always been a great alternative because of its low sugar profile and the fact that a single serving provides 100% of the daily recommended value of vitamin C.”
