Ben & Jerry’s will release a dairy-free ice cream made from either coconut or almond milk next spring, the company’s co-founder has said.
The non-dairy alternative meets a growing demand among the ice cream brand’s vegan and dairy intolerant consumers, and would be released during spring 2016. The development was revealed in an interview with Jerry Greenfield, who founded the company with Ben Cohen in 1978, published by the British newspaper Metro.
The announcement follows the signing of an online petition by more than 27,500 people, calling upon the brand to develop non-dairy options. The company already offers a dairy-free line of sorbets.
Writing as part of their original campaign, petition founders Jenny Foy and Doug Reed said: “We are familiar with their line of sorbets that are vegan, and think it’s great that they offer those, but it would be a huge sign of Ben & Jerry’s support for action against climate change if they offered a non-dairy ice cream.
“For many, Ben & Jerry’s sets the ice cream agenda. They are in a position to lead the way and make non-dairy ice cream a mainstream choice.”
Greenfield told Metro that offering dairy-free choices was “a big thing for Ben & Jerry’s to be doing”.
He continued: “In the US, there are alternatives from smaller companies but Ben & Jerry’s will be the first mainstream company that will do that, will also do it in a really delicious way.”Ben
