Madagascan chocolate producer Madécasse has added a 100% cocoa variety to its “exquisitely African” chocolate bar range.
The new bar is made using three of the island’s heirloom cocoa varieties – pure ancient Criollo, Amelonado and Trinitario – and offers a complex flavour with layers of chocolate that alternate between subtle acidity, fruitiness and citrus. It will join the existing salted almond, toasted coconut, espresso bean and sea salt and nibs varieties.
Its manufacturers claimed that the new bar – free from sugar, as well as artificial additives and preservatives – will find a market among passionate chocolate fans who are “increasingly experimenting with unique cocoa varieties”.
Madécasse co-founder Brett Beach said: “Consumer demand and excitement for high cocoa content bars and unique cocoa varieties has continued to increase with more and more approaching chocolate in a similar way to that of wine. Cocoa varieties, blends, quality and provenance have become integral to consumers so we are confident this latest launch will be a big hit.”
The 100% cocoa variety is available in a 75g size format, which retails for between £2.99 and £3.29.
