Sunny Delight Beverages has been acquired by the owner of Juicy Juice.
Boston-based private equity firm JW Childs Associates has agreed to sell the company, which markets the SunnyD orange drink, to Brynwood Partners. The Connecticut-based private equity firm owns the Juicy Juice and Hug brands of juice, as well as the Daily’s brand of cocktails – all under the umbrella of the Harvest Hill Beverage Company.
A former Procter & Gamble brand, SunnyD was spun off into Sunny Delight Beverages by JW Childs in 2004. The company has since acquired a number of new drinks brands – including Veryfine, Fruit2O and Bossa Nova, which was later discontinued – before selling its European division to Orangina Schweppes in 2011.
Sunny Delight Beverages president and CEO Billy Cyr said: “We are pleased that Brynwood Partners has agreed to acquire Sunny Delight. Our team looks forward to working collaboratively with Brynwood Partners’ management as we develop a detailed business plan for implementation following regulatory approval which is expected in the first quarter of 2016. Additionally, we have enjoyed our partnership with the team at JW Childs and greatly value the support, vision and expertise they brought to our business over the past 11 years.”
Brynwood Partners chairman and CEO Henk Hartong said: “We are pleased to announce the acquisition of Sunny Delight. The iconic Sunny Delight brand, with its highly recognisable bottle design, has a loyal customer following and is an important brand for retailers in the US and Canada. We are also excited about the company’s four manufacturing facilities as they provide Sunny Delight with significant manufacturing flexibility to provide our retail partners with new, innovative products in a timely manner.”
And Adam Suttin, a partner with JW Childs Associates, added: “We are pleased with the results of this transaction which, together with our prior divestitures of Sunny Delight’s European divisions, represents a successful outcome for our firm. We wish Sunny Delight and Brynwood the best of success.”
