The great-great-grandson of George Cadbury, one of the founding fathers of the global confectionery company that bears his name, has launched a new ethical chocolate start-up offering a range of artisan chocolate bars.
But the difference with Love Cocoa, founded by James Cadbury, is that the bars will be handmade in the UK and posted through letterboxes, as the company seeks to shake up the UK’s greetings card market.
The 85g bars will initially comprise a range of traditionally British flavours: honeycomb and honey, English mint, Earl Grey and Maldon sea salt, as well as classic milk (37% cocoa) and dark (70% cocoa). Plans are in place for more collections including a drink-inspired range, as well as a healthy chocolate box.
James Cadbury’s great-great-grandfather was a founding father of the chocolate dynasty.
James Cadbury said: “It was a magical moment when, as a young boy, I realised that the name on my school exercise book matched the one on my chocolate bar. My great-great grandfather had actually created this famous chocolate brand.”
Love Cocoa’s bars are handcrafted in the UK using organic, Fairtrade cocoa, ethically sourced from the Dominican Republic and Ecuador. Other natural ingredients are supplied by independent British producers as far as possible ─ for example, Barnes & Webb honey, Summerdown Farms English mint and Maldon sea salt.
In addition, the company plans to donate 10% of its profits to charitable causes.
Explaining the inspiration behind the chocolate gifting service, Cadbury continued: “I was searching for an online service through which I could post a chocolate gift directly to my mum for her birthday, but I could not find a service which was next day and that fitted through the letterbox. Most retailers require items to be signed for… that ruins the surprise.
“I looked everywhere, but in the end I popped a handmade card and some chocolate in the post. What if I could do this from the comfort of my own home? I thought, and I knew I’d spotted a gap in the market for premium letterbox-friendly chocolate gifts.”
With Love Cocoa, James aims to disrupt the traditional greetings card market. There is a choice between boxes of three for £13.95 or six for £21.95, with standard delivery offered free. Later in the year, the brand plans to launch a chocolate subscription club.
