Berry Global unveils Omni Xtra+ cling film

Berry Global has introduced a new version of its Omni Xtra polyethylene (PE) cling film designed for fresh food applications. Positioned as an alternative to traditional polyvinyl chloride (PVC) cling films, the newly introduced Omni Xtra+ film builds upon the established use of Omni Xtra in packaging fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, as well as deli and bakery products. Distinguishing itself with improved elasticity, consistent stretching behaviour and enhanced impact resistance, Omni Xtra+ also aligns with the requirements of the forthcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). According to Berry, Omni Xtra+ adheres to current European recycling guidelines and holds certification for recyclability and compatibility from RecyClass and Interseroh, which are both industrial organisations dedicated to achieving plastics circularity. Additionally, the film offers an overall weight reduction of more than 25% in density compared to PVC. Its enhanced mechanical properties facilitate the production of a thinner film compared to PVC versions, all while retaining strength and puncture resistance. Berry's advanced manufacturing process behind Omni Xtra+ "also creates a much higher clarity film than traditional PE films, matching that of PVC," said the company. This allows products to be showcased effectively on retail shelves. Berry highlighted that Omni Xtra+ offers additional benefits, such as "excellent machinability" and a "high elastic retention power", ensuring strong sealing for secure packaging and effective product fixation. In addition, the film features superior clarity and strong anti-fog, and condensation properties to provide a high level of product visibility. Moreover, its ease of handling enables efficient throughputs on automatic packing machinery. Benjamin Hendriks, R&D manager of Berry Global Flexible Films, said: “Our Omni Xtra+ film represents a significant technical advance over previous versions, mirroring the performance of PVC in terms of usability and clarity whilst lowering packaging weights for improved yields". “In addition, its enhanced performance and presentation provide customers with effective product protection and maximum on-shelf appeal while meeting consumer demands for more sustainable pack formats and helping companies achieve their own sustainability goals, particularly by avoiding hard-to-recycle PVC films.”
