BASF declares force majeure on selected ingredients following fire at German plant

BASF has declared a force majeure on deliveries of selected vitamin A, vitamin E and carotenoid products as well as selected aroma ingredients, following a recent fire at its plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany.

The fire occurred on 29 July 2024 at a BASF facility that manufactures aroma ingredients and precursors for vitamin A, vitamin E and carotenoid production. According to the company, all ‘slightly injured’ employees were able to leave the medical centre on the evening of the incident.

The selected aroma ingredients are ionones, pyranol, DL-menthol, rose oxides, ethyllinalool, nerolidol and isophytol R. Damage to the plant as a result of the incident has led to a shut-down and a supply disruption of the aforementioned products.

A force majeure removes a company’s liabilities for unforeseen disasters and events beyond the company’s control that prevent the company from fulfilling its contractual obligations. BASF said it is in close contact with customers to share updates and developments regarding the supply capability.

BASF confirmed there was no contamination of air, water or soil and no product residues were detected by the company’s environmental monitoring vehicles, which were underway inside and outside the site. Cleaning, inspection and repair work has begun at the plant.
