Danone Canada has invested $9 million to begin manufacturing individual yogurt cups using polyethylene terephthalate (PET) at its Boucherville plant in Québec.
The new packaging, backed by Danone’s Oikos brand, includes an ambition to integrate 30% recycled PET (rPET).
The initiative is supported by the Québec government through a $3 million loan from Investissement Québec and a $400,000 grant from Recyc-Québec. The project aligns with provincial efforts to reduce plastic pollution and promote sustainable packaging solutions.
The newly launched PET cups are already available on shelves across Canada.
Frédéric Guichard, president of Danone Canada, said: "At Danone, innovation is the driving force behind our sustainable development approach. These new yogurt cups from Oikos...represent an important milestone in our ambition to reduce the environmental footprint of our packaging and inspire other companies to follow suit towards more sustainable solutions."
Christine Fréchette, Québec's minister of the economy, innovation and energy and minister responsible for regional economic development, added: "In addition to generating environmental benefits, our $3.4 million investment will help the company remain competitive in a fast-growing, competitive sector and consolidate its presence in the Canadian market. Supporting our companies as they go green helps us build a prosperous, sustainable economy in Québec."
According to Danone, the move reflects its broader sustainability goals by shifting towards more recyclable and circular packaging materials. The company said the transition will help reduce its environmental footprint while strengthening its position in Canada’s competitive dairy sector.
