Danone launches new skyr yogurt range in the UK

Danone launches new skyr yogurt range in the UK

Danone is set to introduce its new skyr range to the UK market, expanding its dairy portfolio with products that cater to the increasing consumer preference for high-protein, low-fat options. The launch includes various formats and flavours, aiming to capitalise on the growing trend towards natural yogurts.

Danone Skyr, an Icelandic-style yogurt, is characterised by its thick, creamy texture and nutritional profile. The Natural variant is naturally high in protein, offering 14g per serving, with no added sugars. The Strawberry variant offers 12g of protein per serving and contains no artificial colours or flavours.

The Skyr Drinks, available in Vanilla and Strawberry, provide 16g of protein per serving and are designed for convenience, lasting up to four hours without refrigeration.

The new range is crafted from just two ingredients: milk and live cultures, aligning with consumer preferences for simplicity and transparency in food sourcing. Furthermore, the products are 100% non-HFSS (high in fat, salt and sugar), reflecting Danone’s commitment to health-oriented innovations.

The introduction of Danone Skyr comes in response to a notable increase in consumer interest in natural yoghurts, which have seen a 51% value growth over the past two years in the UK market.

The decision to launch Skyr follows its successful uptake in France, where it contributed to a 29% volume growth in the yogurt category in 2019.

Zack Cunningham, head of category and commercial planning dairy at Danone UK & Ireland, said: “We are launching this new range at an exciting moment for the UK market, with growing momentum for Natural yogurts, which have seen 51% value increase over the last two years".

The Skyr range will be available nationwide, with initial rollouts scheduled at major retailers. It has launched at Tesco this week, followed by Ocado on March 3 and Sainsbury’s on April 30.

The product line will include various pack sizes and formats, such as:

800g Natural (RRP £3.30)

480g Natural (RRP £2.25)

150g Natural & Strawberry (RRP £1.10)

270ml Vanilla and Strawberry drinks (RRP £1.50)
