Delfort introduces barrier paper for temperature-sensitive foods

Delfort introduces barrier paper for temperature-sensitive foods

Delfort has introduced a Thinbarrier 302, a new speciality paper designed to provide protection for temperature-sensitive items, such as ice cream and confectionery.

When paired with compatible cold-seal coatings, such as those developed by German consumer goods company Henkel, Delfort's paper delivers strong protection against external factors, maintaining the taste, appearance, and texture of foods.

Delfort highlights its paper packaging as a reliable solution with barrier properties that resist moisture, oxygen, aroma and fat, keeping products fresh and protected.

This paper, despite its light design, maintains high strength and superior flex-crack resistance, making it well-suited for demanding handling and transportation. It is free from intentionally added PFAS and can be recycled using the CEPI method, offering both performance and eco-friendliness.

With an MVTR of less than ten at 23°C and 85% humidity, the paper blocks moisture, keeping products dry and preserving texture. It prevents freezer burn, ensuring frozen foods like ice cream bars remain in top condition without becoming icy or dried out.

According to the company, for products like powdered foods, dry snacks and baked goods, maintaining a low MVTR is also crucial to prevent moisture absorption and preserve their quality.

The barrier paper has an OTR value of less than 30, minimising oxygen exposure to preserve the quality of chocolates, nuts and other sensitive foods. This ensures products maintain their flavour, nutritional value and aroma over time.

Delfort explains that its barrier paper provides durability and prevents unintentional openings. Furthermore, the release coating on the cold seal prevents the paper from sticking to itself during storage or processing, ensuring easy handling and smooth operations on packaging lines.

Freddy E. Boscán G, manager PD innovation of flexible coatings at Henkel, stated: "Delfort’s barrier paper was optimally designed with a paper surface that makes it compatible with a range of cold seals from Henkel, each tailored for specific requirements of relevant flow pack structures. These cold seals promote circularity by being certified as recycling-compatible and enable sustainable packaging solutions that align with the industry's shift towards a closed-loop economy.”
