GEA’s new valve technology reduces microbial risks in spray drying

GEA has introduced a new Conta dual block valve technology for spray dryers.

The patented system is designed to reduce microbiological risks, ensuring safer and more efficient processing operations, improving sanitary operations and providing greater process and product safety.

The Conta dual block valve receives feed from the feed supply system and distributes it to multiple atomiser nozzles, which then spray the feed into the drying chamber.

The new design reduces the areas where feed can accumulate by up to 96%, allowing for more efficient cleaning in place and reducing microbiological risks, compared to traditional designs.

Additionally, compared to tradition systems, each valve weighs half as much, which makes the machine easier and safer to handle. The design also eliminates the use of external welded manifolds, allowing for manual inspection and maintenance with simple tools.

This simplified inspection and maintenance supports continuous operation and reduces plant downtime.

The CONTA dual block valve unit can be easily configured for both new and existing spray drying systems, ensuring minimal disruption and quick installation. This allows facilities to resume operations quickly – GEA says that retrofitting to existing spray dryers is straightforward and often only requires minor programming changes.
