Grillo’s Pickles has announced plans to open a new $54 million food manufacturing facility in Bartholomew County, Indiana, to support rising national demand.
The Boston-based company recently broke ground on the 155,000-square-foot site in Taylorsville, located near Columbus and adjacent to the future $175 million King’s Hawaiian bakery.
Both Grillo’s and King’s Hawaiian are subsidiaries of Irresistible Foods Group (IFG). Joe Leonardo, vice president of strategic operations at IFG and COO of King's Hawaiian, said: "When we purchased the Bartholomew County site, we did so with thoughts about building it out in phases".
The new facility is expected to create up to 150 jobs and will produce Grillo’s refrigerated pickles, which are made using a family recipe with no artificial preservatives. Company president and CEO Adam Kaufman said Indiana was chosen for its central location, skilled workforce and business-friendly environment.
Local authorities have pledged financial support for the development, including up to $3.7 million in infrastructure funding and a ten-year property tax phase-in estimated to save the company $1.2 million. Additional funding of up to $1 million from Indiana’s READI 2.0 programme will go toward road and intersection upgrades in the surrounding area.
The Indiana Economic Development Corporation has also offered up to $1.4 million in performance-based tax credits tied to job creation targets.
