Heineken opens global R&D centre in the Netherlands to drive brewing innovation

Heineken opens global R&D centre in the Netherlands to drive brewing innovation

Heineken has inaugurated the Dr. H.P. Heineken Centre, a state-of-the-art global research and development (R&D) facility located in Zoeterwoude, Netherlands. The opening ceremony was officiated by His Majesty King Willem-Alexander, marking a pivotal moment in the company's commitment to innovation and sustainability in brewing.

The €45 million investment in the 8,800 m² facility underscores Heineken's ambition to enhance its position as a leader in the brewing and brewing technology sector. This new R&D hub will focus on advancing brewing techniques, developing new products and addressing evolving consumer preferences, particularly in the realms of flavour and sustainability.

Heineken's CEO Dolf van den Brink highlighted the importance of innovation in the company's history: "From the creation of our signature A-yeast in the 19th century, to the development of Heineken® 0.0, we boldly explore new ideas to create legendary drinks, brands and experiences to delight consumers and stay ahead”. He noted that the centre will play a crucial role in the company's 'EverGreen Strategy,' aimed at developing distinctive beverages while minimising environmental impact.

As consumer drinking habits evolve, there is a growing demand for new flavours, natural ingredients and low- or no-alcohol options. The Dr. H.P. Heineken Centre is equipped with cutting-edge labs and sensory research facilities designed to accelerate product development in response to these trends. This includes potential advancements in Heineken's non-alcoholic offerings and new premium lagers.

Hubert te Braake, director of R&B, highlighted the centre's role in connecting Heineken's brewing legacy with modern scientific advancements. “Every new product developed here aims to become part of tomorrow’s drinking culture, creating new rituals while staying rooted in what makes beer sociable and enjoyable,” he commented.

Strategically located near Delft University of Technology, the centre is set to foster collaboration betweenHeineken’s R&D teams and leading academic institutions. This partnership aims to drive innovation in sustainable brewing practices and fermentation science. Professor Jack Pronk from Delft University remarked on the Centre's potential, calling it a "launchpad for innovation in sustainable brewing".

The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs also expressed support for Heineken's investment, recognising its contribution to the Netherlands' reputation as a leader in brewing technology and innovation.

The Dr. H.P. Heineken Centre is designed with sustainability in mind, built to BENG (Nearly Energy Neutral) standards and carrying an A++++ energy label.
