Kerry Group has inaugurated its first taste manufacturing facility in Rwanda, East Africa, aiming to bolster local food and beverage manufacturers.
The investment aligns with its broader initiative to invest €1 billion in emerging markets to enhance growth and sustainability within the global food industry.
The new facility, located in Kigali, was officially opened in the presence of key stakeholders, including representatives from the Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority and local universities, as well as top manufacturers from across the region. This development is part of Kerry's ongoing strategy to establish manufacturing and research facilities closer to high-growth markets throughout Africa.
Jad Neaime, general manager of Kerry Africa, said: "This establishment is a pivotal step toward our vision of delivering high-quality, nutritious products to millions of African consumers."
As the only global taste and nutrition solutions provider with production capabilities in East Africa, Kerry aims to partner with local businesses to address their unique challenges while leveraging innovative technologies and a global network.
The Kigali facility is designed with sustainability in mind, featuring a zero-waste-to-landfill policy and energy-efficient utility systems, along with a specialised wastewater treatment facility.
Kerry's presence in East Africa dates back to 2018, when it opened a technology and innovation centre in Kenya. Since then, the company has expanded its footprint through acquisitions and investments, now operating seven manufacturing sites across the region, including locations in Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Cameroon, South Africa and Nigeria.
Neaime added that Rwanda's rapidly growing economy, particularly in the food processing sector, necessitates local production. "By producing in Rwanda, we are not only strengthening our localisation plans but also enhancing our engagement with customers to better meet their needs," he said. This includes fostering local partnerships, increasing local sourcing and investing in the development of local talent.
