The FoodBev Awards team is pleased to introduce the next member of its esteemed 2025 judging panel: food & packaging ecosystem expert Silvia D'Alesio. Returning to the panel this year, she shares insights into her role in the food industry and what she’ll be looking for in a standout entry.
I'm honoured to be part of judge panel 's prestigious Food Awards! This event is a cornerstone for recognising innovation and excellence in the food and beverage industry, where I have been researching for the past 10 years.
My work focuses on exploring new formulations, sustainable packaging solutions and innovative approaches to reduce food waste. By integrating scientific research with cutting-edge technology and creative design, I aim to contribute to the development of healthier, more sustainable and mass market food products.
I want lastly to extend my heartfelt thanks to the organisers for their unwavering dedication to updating and enhancing this vital platform.
My evaluation process is guided by a comprehensive five-step criteria to spotlight the best in the next new food ready to be commercialised with success:
Packaging design: to assess the type of packaging and its proper disposal in recycling systems. This criterion emphasises the importance of communication through sustainable packaging that could be both functional and environmentally friendly.
Sustainability in product categories: I look for scientific approaches in managing new formulations that can open up new product categories, even by re-evaluating ancient ingredients. This criterion underscores the importance of innovation in sustainability.
Food waste: I evaluate solutions that combine the revaluation of raw materials or new packaging to longer preserve quality product and prevent waste. This criterion focuses on the critical issue of reducing food waste through the combination of product and primary packaging and distribution.
Purchase and post-consumption experience: I examine how commercial channels enhance the consumer experience, including the role of food technology in improving this experience. This criterion highlights the importance of a seamless and enjoyable consumer journey.
Wellbeing at the table: I consider new nutritional innovations that bring attention to healthy and convenient food products. This criterion emphasises the role of nutrition in promoting mass wellbeing.
