Heineken Netherlands acquires Oedipus Brewing

Heineken Netherlands acquires Oedipus Brewing

Heineken Netherlands has announced that it has acquired beer brewer Oedipus Brewing for an undisclosed sum. In 2019, Heineken bought a minority stake in Oedipus. Oedipus said it will continue to brew beer in "its own way" and will also remain based in Amsterdam-Noord. Frederik van Droffelaar, one of the two directors of Oedipus, said: "What matters is that two brewers have found each other in their ambitions. Oedipus has great plans to further realise their dream. At the same time, Heineken is impressed by the way Oedipus is developing and manifesting itself and wants to learn even more from the creative craft beer market." According to van Droffelaar, selling a stake to Heineken enabled Oedipus to switch from being focused on the hospitality industry – which was closed during the coronavirus pandemic – to supermarkets. Hans Böhm, managing director of Heineken Netherlands, said: "I think it's great that we're going to work even more with the people of Oedipus. With their beautiful, colourful, progressive beers and a nice mix of design, music and culture, Oedipus has managed to acquire a unique position in a short time. We are truly impressed by the creativity, passion and inspiration with which their beers are brewed and presented.” He added: “They are an inspiration to many and know how to connect people, something Heineken values. Oedipus provides beer and fun in their own unique way and we admire them for that…We can learn a lot from the way Oedipus has developed and will develop. Together we are moving forward to a bright future where brewing and fun are paramount." The acquisition of Oedipus coincides with Heineken’s planned relocation to move into larger premises near its current location in Amsterdam-Noord next year.
