Hormel Foods, the maker of the iconic Spam brand, is expanding its portfolio with Spam Korean BBQ Flavoured launch.
The new Spam offering features a bold blend of umami and Korean-inspired spices, including soy sauce, garlic, ginger, paprika and a hint of gochujang (Korean fermented red chilli paste) to deliver a sweet yet spicy flavour profile.
The product maintains the qualities of Spam Classic, but with a distinct tangy twist.
According to Jennesa Kinscher, senior brand manager for the Spam brand, the new flavour is a nod to the brand's deep-rooted connection to Korean food culture.
"Since the Korean War, Spam products have become a staple in global Korean customs, from traditional dishes to unique gifts during Chuseok celebrations," she said.
"This new variety not only satisfies the comfort and nostalgia our current fans crave, but it also attracts new fans who are eager to try the sweet and zesty flavours that Korean BBQ offers."
The launch of Spam Korean BBQ Flavoured comes as Korean cuisine continues to gain mainstream popularity in the US.
Data from market research firm Mintel shows that the number of Korean-inspired menu items at US restaurants has grown by 20% over the past three years, driven by consumer demand for bold, authentic flavours.
To help introduce the new variety, Hormel has partnered with Esther Choi, a New York City-based chef and TV host who is known for her expertise in Korean cuisine.
"Korean BBQ and the Spam brand are both food and cultural experiences that are best enjoyed together, making this flavour team-up the perfect pairing," Choi said. "With a combo of sweet, salty and spice in this new variety, I suggest bringing the extra sizzle to mealtime by grilling it and pairing it with some kimchi."
Spam Korean BBQ Flavoured is now available exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide. The new variety is the 12th permanent flavour in the Spam brand's portfolio.
