Tesco introduces potato burger rolls as part of major finest bakery expansion

Tesco introduces potato burger rolls as part of major finest bakery expansion

Tesco is expanding its premium bakery offering with the launch of Tesco Finest Potato Burger Rolls, which the retailer says are the first supermarket own-label burger buns in the UK made with real mashed potato rather than potato flakes.

The new product arrives ahead of the peak summer barbecue season and forms part of a broader rollout of 22 new Tesco Finest bakery lines now available in stores nationwide and online.

Inspired by the potato rolls served in popular restaurant chains and independent burger concepts, the new buns are designed to help consumers recreate a premium burger experience at home. The rolls use real mashed potato in the dough, which contributes to a softer texture and improved moisture retention while providing enough structure to support heavily loaded burgers.

According to Tesco, the natural starches in mashed potato help create a light, fluffy crumb while improving freshness and resilience compared with traditional white burger buns.

The retailer highlighted several advantages of potato-based burger buns, including a softer texture, a more balanced sweetness than brioche, and improved performance when paired with juicy burger patties and sauces.

The launch reflects a broader trend toward premiumisation in the bakery aisle, with consumers increasingly seeking restaurant-inspired products and elevated at-home dining experiences. Social media platforms have also contributed to growing awareness of potato buns, which have become a staple in many premium burger restaurants due to their distinctive texture and durability.

Priced at £1.85 for a pack of four, the Potato Burger Rolls are one of several new products joining the Tesco Finest bakery range. Other additions include White Chocolate & Blueberry Scones, Ancient Grains Bloomer, Hot Honey Sub Rolls, Chilli Pinsa, Fruited Sourdough, Sourdough Crumpets, and Sourdough Bagels.

The wider launch underscores Tesco's continued investment in premium own-label bakery products, a category that has benefited from consumers seeking artisanal-style quality and greater variety within mainstream retail channels.

The full range is now available across Tesco stores and online.
