Glass packaging manufacturer Vetropack has opened a new fully automated manufacturing facility in Boffalora sopra Ticino, Italy.

The warehouse is equipped with modern technology designed to optimise logistics operations at Vetropack’s new Italian site. According to the company, it achieves ‘notably higher’ efficiency in order processing compared to conventional or partially automated warehouses.

Vetropack is able to ensure real-time full traceability due to the new system’s ability to enable immediate responses to any deviations and significantly reduced lead times. Automation also ensures even distribution of tasks across available resources, helping the company to avoid bottlenecks and maximise efficiency.

Jaroslav Mikliš, group supply chain projects and transformation manager at Vetropack, said that all processes are aligned with the latest technology, including the logistics, which were planned using simulations. The entire system can be remotely monitored.

“In a fully automated warehouse, unnecessary movements are a thing of the past,” Mikliš explained. “At the same time, precise data acquisition enables us to control and monitor processes with exceptional accuracy.”

Avoiding manual intervention can also enhance occupational safety and the quality of secondary packaging, as the use of AI and other automation technologies can prevent risky situations as well as packaging damage.

Additionally, Vetropack highlighted the new factory’s contribution to its sustainability goals. The entire vehicle fleet has been equipped with low-consumption lithium batteries, which reduce the charging cycle durations and improve the charging process efficiency.

Mikliš added: “Thanks to our efficient use of the entire area, we are reducing shuttle traffic to other warehouses and will hopefully soon be able to eliminate it completely.”
