August Egg Company issues major recall due to Salmonella contamination risk

August Egg Company issues major recall due to Salmonella contamination risk

August Egg Company has announced a significant recall of approximately 1.7 million dozen brown cage-free and certified organic eggs in the US due to potential contamination with Salmonella Enteritidis. This recall affects multiple brand names and is part of an ongoing investigation into a related outbreak of Salmonella illnesses.

The recall highlights the serious health risks associated with Salmonella infections, which can lead to severe gastrointestinal illness and complications, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of Salmonella infection may include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The affected eggs were distributed between February 3 2025, and May 15 2025, to retail locations across California and Nevada, as well as to Walmart stores in several states, including Arizona, Washington and New Mexico. Consumers can identify the recalled products by the plant code numbers P-6562 or CA5330 and specific Julian dates printed on the cartons.

The recalled eggs include various brands such as Clover Organic, First Street, Nulaid, O Organics and Marketside, among others. The products were packaged in both fibre and plastic cartons. A comprehensive list of affected items includes different sizes and types of cage-free and organic eggs, with sell-by dates ranging from March 4 2025 to June 19 2025.

August Egg Company has ceased the sale of fresh shell eggs and has been diverting all eggs from the affected plant to an egg-breaking facility for pasteurisation, a process that effectively eliminates any potential pathogens.

In response to the contamination risk, August Egg Company has stated that it is conducting a thorough review of its food safety protocols to prevent future occurrences. The company is committed to implementing corrective actions based on its internal findings and the ongoing investigation.

“We believe it is appropriate out of an abundance of caution to conduct this voluntary recall, as consumers may still have these eggs in their homes,” the company said. They advise consumers who may have purchased the affected products to return them to their place of purchase for a full refund.
