UK-based Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses has received planning permission from Preston City Council to construct a state-of-the-art cheesemaking campus on its Inglewhite farm.
This development marks a significant step in the company’s recovery following a devastating fire that destroyed its previous facilities in November 2023.
The new campus will be built on the site of the fourth-generation family-owned business and is designed to enhance the cheesemaking process while incorporating sustainable practices.
The initiative aims to address operational challenges faced by the company since the fire, which had forced it to operate at only 60% of its pre-disaster capacity due to space limitations.
Matthew Hall, the current owner, highlighted the importance of this project for both the business and the local community. “This milestone is not just about rebuilding; it’s about innovating and ensuring the continuity of our craft,” he commented.
The new facility will feature a leading maturation space tailored to the unique requirements of farmhouse cheese production, allowing Butlers to focus on quality and efficiency.
In a bid to support local economies, Butlers has partnered with several Lancashire suppliers, including Wareing Buildings and Sanderson Brothers, both of which are family-owned businesses. The construction will also use stone from Longridge quarry and recycled materials from the old site, contributing to a reduction in food miles by 40%.
The cheesemaking campus is positioned to become one of the most advanced operations in the UK, reflecting a commitment to both tradition and innovation. “Our community has been with us every step of the way,” Hall noted, highlighting the importance of local support in the company’s recovery journey.
The completion of the new cheesemaking campus is anticipated by the end of 2025, paving the way for Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses to resume its role as a key player in the UK’s artisanal cheese market, while also creating skilled jobs and contributing to the local agricultural economy.
Founded in 1932, Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses is a family-run business known for its award-winning range of British cheeses, crafted using traditional methods and local ingredients.
