Mondi and Meurer collaborate on new paper packaging solution

Mondi and Meurer have partnered to develop a secondary paper packaging solution for bundling food and drinks, replacing the conventional plastic shrink film. The new TrayWrap paper solution, incorporating Mondi's Advantage StretchWrap, is currently used by a coffee brand to secure 12 coffee packages during transportation in Sweden. This paper wrap firmly holds the coffee packs in place using four to six adhesive dots on the bottom side of the corrugated tray. With pre-punched folding points ensuring stability on each open side, the products remain visible, stackable, transportable and easy to unpack for sale.

The company said the 'Advantage StretchWrap is 100% kraft paper made from renewable resources'. It has no coating, is fully recyclable and can be easily disposed of by retail customers in Europe's current paper recycling streams.

By collaborating with Meurer, Mondi has been able to ensure existing machinery can be adapted to accommodate the new solution. The technology, similar to film technology, simplifies the modification process for food and drink producers, eliminating the need for purchasing new equipment. Meurer's latest Paper Hood Machine (PHM) integrates an in-line paper technology with enhanced resistance to mechanical stress. This enables it to effectively process a diverse range of paper qualities, including Mondi's Advantage StretchWrap, along with various tray formats. Larsgoran Berglund, business development manager kraft paper at Mondi, said: “Our aim is to be always innovating and providing solutions that work for the product, the customer and the environment. By working closely with Meurer, we are jointly mapping out a path to sustainability that is convenient for customers, supporting them in achieving their own sustainability goals.” Jens Averbeck, senior global key account manager at Meurer, added: “We are delighted to be working with Mondi, developing solutions that will provide food and drink producers with effective and secure packaging solutions that reduce or replace unnecessary plastic. This is just one example of how effective paper can be in securing goods, and we look forward working with more food producers with this product and process, tackling today’s challenges in the FMCG industries.”
