Seafood robotics company Shinkei Systems secures $22m in Series A funding

Seafood robotics company Shinkei Systems secures $22m in Series A funding

Shinkei Systems, a US-based seafood robotics company, has successfully raised $22 million in a Series A funding round co-led by Founders Fund and Interlagos. The investment aims to enhance the company’s mission to transform the seafood industry by integrating advanced robotics and artificial intelligence with traditional fishing methods.

Founded in 2021, Shinkei Systems has developed a unique approach to fish harvesting, leveraging a proprietary technology stack that combines robotics, supply chain tracking and cold storage practices.

The company's flagship product, Seremoni Grade seafood, is positioned as a high-quality alternative in the market, emphasising humane harvesting practices inspired by the Japanese ike jime technique. This method minimises stress for fish during capture, resulting in superior flavour and texture, yet has historically been too labour-intensive for commercial use.

The recent funding will facilitate the expansion of Shinkei’s operations, allowing the company to reach a broader customer base among retailers and restaurants. Shinkei co-founders Saif Khawaja and Reed Ginsberg have expressed their commitment to making Michelin-quality seafood accessible to a wider audience, with plans to introduce new species such as red snapper and salmon this summer.

Shinkei’s business model includes partnerships with independent fishermen, ensuring that each catch is traceable and that fishermen receive premium prices for their fish. This profit-sharing structure incentivises sustainable practices and supports local fishing communities. The company’s commitment to transparency and quality is further underscored by its collaboration with Yamato Transport, which facilitates distribution to markets, including the prestigious Toyosu fish market in Japan.

The response from the culinary community has been positive, with Seremoni Grade seafood quickly gaining traction among top chefs and retailers. Notable establishments such as Blue Hill at Stone Barns and Atomix have incorporated Shinkei’s products into their menus, highlighting the growing demand for high-quality, sustainably sourced seafood.

Delian Asparouhov, a partner at Founders Fund, noted the potential for Shinkei to disrupt the seafood market. “Saif was born to build a juggernaut in the seafood industry," he said. "His initial product is already resonating with everyone from Michelin-starred chefs to quality-driven consumers.”

As the company moves forward, its focus will remain on leveraging technology to redefine the seafood supply chain, championing American fishermen while delivering unmatched quality to consumers. With a total of $30 million raised since its inception, Shinkei Systems is poised to make significant strides in the seafood sector, potentially reshaping how seafood is sourced and consumed.
