SIG partners with local firms to establish Egypt's first comprehensive recycling system for beverage cartons

SIG partners with local firms to establish Egypt's first comprehensive recycling system for beverage cartons

Packaging solutions provider SIG has collaborated with Plastic Bank, Carta Misr and TileGreen to launch the nation’s first end-to-end recycling system for used aseptic beverage cartons. This initiative aims to reshape the country’s recycling infrastructure, which has historically lacked formal waste collection and recycling systems.

The partnership addresses multiple stages of the recycling process, integrating innovative technologies and local expertise. Plastic Bank will manage the collection of used beverage cartons, leveraging a blockchain-secured platform to ensure traceability and transparency. This system empowers waste collectors, allowing them to convert discarded materials into a reliable source of income.

Carta Misr, a local paper mill, will play a crucial role in the initiative by separating paper fibres from the aluminum and polymer layers of the cartons. This process will yield high-quality recycled paper products, contributing to a more sustainable manufacturing landscape. Meanwhile, TileGreen, an Egyptian start-up, is set to repurpose the PolyAl mix into durable interlock bricks, demonstrating the versatility of recycled materials.

Abdelghany Eladib, president and general manager for India, Middle East and Africa at SIG, highlighted the initiative's potential: “This collaboration ensures that all materials from used beverage cartons can be recycled, preventing components from ending up in landfills. Our efforts exemplify the necessity of sustainable innovation in today’s economy.”

The initiative not only focuses on environmental sustainability but also creates economic opportunities for local communities. By establishing a reliable recycling framework, it supports steady livelihoods for waste collectors and engages consumers through tangible applications of recycled materials, such as building products.

Mohammed Gamal, CEO of Carta Misr, added: “Used beverage cartons are a rich source of high-quality fibre, and this partnership with SIG allows us to harness this valuable resource effectively. By integrating these fibres into our production processes, we produce superior paper products while reducing the need for additional raw materials. This initiative not only strengthens the recycling value chain but also demonstrates how sustainable practices can drive both environmental and economic benefits.”

Khaled Raafat, CTO and co-founder of TileGreen, said: “Repurposing PolyAl into durable building materials using our patented technology not only keeps waste out of landfills but also offers a scalable, sustainable solution for the construction industry. Together, we’re creating a future where sustainability drives both environmental and economic progress.”
