US-based agricultural sustainability business Truterra has announced its first-ever programmes specifically for dairy producers.
Truterra works with farmers to help improve the environmental impact of agricultural production while creating incremental financial benefits.
Its 2024 dairy soils carbon programmes reward pre-qualified dairy producers who adopt sustainable practices on the crops they use for dairy feed, including silage and alfalfa.
Sustainable practices include the use of cover crops, strip-till or no-till to improve soil health and increase soil carbon levels. Cover cropping is a practice whereby crops are grown specifically to protect and improve soil health, while strip-till and no-till practices use less or no tillage to minimise disturbance of the soil.
Dairy companies such as Land O’Lakes, Bel Brands and Dairy Farmers of America are supporting the programmes, which are open to both new and long-term practice adopters. Participants are eligible via invitation through sponsoring companies.
Other new programme launches for Truterra include a field data management programme, which rewards eligible farmers for providing filed management data on their 2024 corn or soya bean crops; a USDA-funded financial assistance programme, supporting farmers’ conversion to strip/no-till and/or the addition of cover crops with financial incentives; and an early adopter programme, which rewards eligible farmers who made the transition to strip/no-till before crop year 2015.
Jamie Leifker, president of Truterra, commented: “Truterra is focused on pairing farmers seeking to adopt climate-smart practices with companies looking to fulfill their environmental commitments. We are excited to expand into the dairy industry with these unique market-backed programmes.”
