Barilla expands pesto line with new flavours

Barilla expands pesto line with new flavours

Pasta brand Barilla is set to introduce three new pesto sauces this autumn, aimed at enhancing culinary creativity and versatility among consumers.

The new flavours – Creamy Tomato, Sweet and Spicy Pepper and Vegan Pesto – will be launched exclusively at Kroger stores in the US starting in October.

This expansion reflects Barilla's response to increasing consumer demand for diverse and authentic Italian flavours.

Matt Michaels, pesto brand manager, commented: "This Barilla expansion meets consumers’ growing appetite for genuine Italian flavour with a range that offers creamy, spicy and sweet notes to satisfy diverse preferences”.

He continued: "With iconic Mediterranean flavor profiles, we believe these pesto sauces will not only inspire new culinary creations but also bring people together around delicious meals, becoming a cherished staple in kitchens across the country".

The new pesto varieties are positioned to complement a variety of dishes beyond traditional pasta, including sandwiches, pizzas and seafood. Each sauce is ready to use, requiring no heating or cooking, which aligns with current consumer trends favouring convenience without sacrificing flavour.

Creamy Tomato Pesto combines sun-ripened tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, and a blend of Grana Padano and Pecorino Romano cheeses, aimed at delivering a rich Italian taste.

Sweet and Spicy Pepper Pesto features a mix of red and chili peppers, providing a mild heat that appeals to a broader audience. Meanwhile, Vegan Pesto, made from 100% Italian basil and free from cheese, caters to the growing market of consumers with dietary restrictions.

Barilla’s new products will be priced at a suggested retail price of $3.99, with plans for wider distribution expected in 2025. This move not only aims to capture market share in the competitive pesto segment but also reflects Barilla’s commitment to innovation in response to changing consumer preferences.
