Paboco unveils 'industry’s first’ market-ready paper bottle and cap

Danish paper bottle manufacturer Paboco has collaborated with Blue Ocean Closures to create the ‘industry’s first’ market-ready paper bottle and fibre-based cap combination.


The entire bottle, including the cap, has a total weight of less than 16 grams, with an HDPE (high density polyethylene) barrier weighing below 2 grams – adhering to Paboco’s focus on using minimum materials in manufacturing.


The bottle’s thin barrier means that the combined package is recyclable as paper packaging.


Michael Michelsen, commercial director at Paboco, said: “To us at Paboco, this brings about an immediate change in the industry; here we are changing the material options of the packaging industry and keeping a focus on lightweight packaging. We have already kicked off production and expect to see these bottles in consumers' hands by early 2025. I am excited that we can offer this solution, not as a concept, but as a new packaging reality."


Ola Tönnberg, CCO of Blue Ocean Closures, commented: “We see that the fibre-based closure is a new standard category, applicable to a range of different bottle materials. Expanding the possibilities to reduce plastics, we are very excited to also launch it on fibre bottles, through our collaboration with Paboco.”


Paboco unveils 'industry’s first’ market-ready paper bottle and cap

Paboco will apply the technical and design learnings from the combination of paper bottles and caps within the ‘Pioneer Community’, a group of companies who support the transition to paper bottles – those in the community include Carlsberg, Pernod Ricard’s Absolut and Coca-Cola Europe.


Absolut is working with Paboco and Blue Ocean Closures on the new bottle. “We are proud to be part of both the Paboco and Blue Ocean Closures Pioneer Communities,” commented Elin Furelid, director of future of packaging at The Absolut Group. “This launch marks an important milestone in sustainable packaging, and we look forward to learning from it as we continue our cross-industry efforts to drive sustainable innovation and expand our packaging material portfolio.”


The paper bottle and cap is available to order for selected partners and is expected to reach consumers in early 2025.
