Paper packaging manufacturer Sappi Europe is expanding its portfolio with three new barrier paper solutions for food and beverage applications.
The first innovation, Guard ICC, is a flexible packaging paper designed specifically for applications where dimensional stability or double-sided protection are needed, making it ideally suited for ice cream cones.
It is equipped with barrier properties against water vapour, as well as grease on both sides. The bleached kraft paper features a machine-glazed surface. According to Sappi, it also ‘excels’ when using flexographic or gravure printing processes, as well as in conversion processes such as glueing and dye cutting. The flexible paper solution is designed to offer a ‘premium’ and ‘distinctive’ look and feel. It is easily recyclable in the paper waste stream.
Sappi is also launching Guard OHS, a versatile barrier paper designed for various flexible packaging applications including flow wraps, sachets and pouches for both food and non-food markets.
Guard OHS is available in three print side versions and grammages: Natural (62 g/m²), Silk, and Gloss (both in 77 g/m²). The company said that all three versions feature ‘excellent’ barrier properties, including water vapour, oxygen, MOSH/MOAH, as well as aroma and grease resistance. The solution aims to offer an attractive, recyclable and reliable alternative to packaging that calls for reliable safety properties, but for which high barriers would be ‘excessive’.
Finally, a third addition to Sappi’s barrier range – Guard Twist Gloss – was specially developed for sugar confectionery and chocolate packaging applications. The one-side single coated paper features high tear strength, making the solution particularly suitable for twisting applications.
Guard Twist Gloss also offers a functional coating on the reverse side, providing mild grease resistance. The machine-finished solution’s glossy top surface was designed with a premium feel in mind, and the paper’s printability and processing qualities allow it to minimise fold and colour cracking.
The barrier paper is available in a grammage of 45g/m², and can provide an alternative to non-recyclable waxed paper. According to Sappi, several confectionery packaging manufacturers have tested the paper in operation and were ‘very impressed’ with its quality.
René Köhler, director of paper and packaging solutions at Sappi Europe, said: “Our functional papers clearly illustrate the extent to which Sappi is at the forefront of innovation. The recent addition of our Guard OHS, Guard ICC and Guard Twist products underscores our commitment to developing new, even more efficient and more sustainable solutions for our customers and partners.”
The new products will be showcased at Sappi’s booth (Hall 4A, stand 306) at the Fachpack packaging industry event (24-26 September) this year in Nuremberg, Germany.
