Lubrizol introduces melt-in-mouth magnesium prototype for nutraceutical market

Lubrizol introduces melt-in-mouth magnesium prototype for nutraceutical market

Lubrizol has unveiled a new prototype formulation featuring its Magshape microcapsules, designed to deliver bioavailable magnesium in a convenient, fast-melt powdered stick format.

This solution aims to cater to the growing demand for palatable and effective magnesium supplementation, particularly among active individuals and athletes.

The prototype, presented as orosoluble sticks, provides a single dose of 250 mg of elemental magnesium – aligning with the upper limit recommended by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for food supplements.

Each 1.5g sachet is engineered to dissolve quickly, offering a practical solution for on-the-go consumers seeking an easy method to meet their daily magnesium needs.

“Orosoluble powders that can deliver uniform palatable doses of magnesium require significant expertise to develop successfully,” said Alan Connolly, R&D manager at Lubrizol.

He added: “It involves striking the right balance between particle size, solubility, taste and flowability. Too large a particle size will result in poor dispersion in the mouth leading to a gritty, unpleasant texture. However, even the smallest particle will not behave as expected if it displays poor orosolubility.”

Magnesium, often referred to as the 'mindfulness mineral,' is increasingly recognised for its role in promoting muscle relaxation, reducing stress, and supporting overall energy metabolism.

Tip of the tongue...'oral disintegration' involves a technology where solid products dissolve quickly in the mouth upon contact with saliva. From functional powder sticks to popping candy, products designed to dissolve on the tongue offer a convenient and enjoyable way to ingest a variety of nutrients and flavours. The benefits of this technology include ease of use, rapid absorption and versatility, making it especially advantageous for children, the elderly and those with busy lifestyles. With EFSA approval for its contribution to normal muscle function and fatigue reduction, magnesium is becoming a staple in the diets of those leading active lifestyles.

Isabel Gómez, global marketing manager for Lubrizol's nutraceutical business, highlighted the common challenges faced by consumers in obtaining adequate magnesium through traditional supplements, which can be bulky and often lead to digestive discomfort.

“Magshape was designed to ease the supplementation routine by concentrating a potent dose into the smallest serving while ensuring better absorption and minimising side effects,” she said.

The proprietary microencapsulation technology used in Magshape enhances the bioavailability of magnesium by increasing the surface area of micronised magnesium oxide particles. This approach facilitates a gradual absorption process, potentially reducing the gastrointestinal side effects typically associated with magnesium supplementation.

Lubrizol's innovation aligns with the broader trend in the nutraceutical industry towards more user-friendly and effective supplement formats.

With the Magshape microencapsulated magnesium, manufacturers can explore diverse applications across various food matrices, expanding the potential for innovative product offerings in the health and wellness sector.

A bioavailability study for Magshape is currently underway to further validate its effectiveness.
