UK supermarket Waitrose has introduced ‘Urban Pizza,’ a new range of takeaway-style pizzas, sides and dips.
The range features four pizzas, four sides and two dips, designed to emulate takeaway pizza offerings from ‘trendy urban eateries’ and bring trends from the urban pizza scene to supermarket shelves.
The Big Cheeseburger features a deep Detroit-style base, with toppings inspired by gourmet cheeseburgers – tomato sauce, three cheeses, peppered beef, smoky bacon, gherkins, and a sachet of burger sauce.
Meanwhile, the Italian-inspired Carbonara offers a 12-inch, classic crust stonebaked pizza topped with garlic bechamel, shaved and diced mozzarella, pasta, smoky bacon and black pepper.
Also included in the range is a 12-inch stonebaked Pepperoni, topped with tomato and mascarpone sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni and hot honey drizzle. Finally, the Margherita simply combines a 12-inch stonebaked base with a cheese crumb crust, tomato sauce, and shaved and diced mozzarella.
Side dishes include garlic flatbread, mac and cheese bites, mozzarella sticks and garlic doughballs, while consumers can also choose from two dips to accompany the rest of the range: garlic, or hot sauce.
Zoe Simons, senior development chef at Waitrose, said: “The urban pizza scene is booming with restaurants opening all around the world, so we wanted to give our customers the same great taste and trends at home”.
She added: “Designed with sharing in mind, customers will be able to pick up a whole feast to bring family and friends together for a weekend treat.”
