Aldi Ireland has announced a €125 million five-year contract with Dawn Meats, with an annual cost of €25 million. Dawn Meats will hire 15 new staff members and add six new lines to Aldi's range, increasing its supply by 35%. According to the company, Aldi's increased investment has prompted Dawn Meats to accelerate a €5 million expansion plan for its Waterford facility. Irish Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, said: “This €125 million announcement with Dawn Meats is an indication of the scale of Aldi's commitment to the Irish beef sector and is an endorsement of the quality of beef produced by Irish farmers every day.”   Dawn Meats CEO Niall Browne commented: “We are delighted to continue our partnership with Aldi for this significant contract. • Air fryers: A growing trend heating up the food industry

In recent years, air fryers have surged in popularity, reflecting a shift in consumer behaviour towards healthier, more convenient cooking methods. The rise of air fryers is creating a new consumption space in the food market, prompting companies to adapt and innovate in response to this growing demand. FoodBev’s Rafaela Sousa explores how air fryers are reshaping culinary habits and influencing consumer choices. Air fryers made their market debut in the early 2010s. Introduced by companies such as Philips, they were initially marketed as a healthier alternative to traditional deep frying. They were designed to mimic the results of deep frying using significantly less oil, leveraging rapid air technology to cook food. The air fryer technology is based on convection ovens, which use a fan to circulate hot air around the food at high speed, cooking it evenly and resulting in a crispy finish. In addition to their health benefits, air fryers offer an economic advantage. They not only save on cooking oil costs over time, but also contribute to lowering overall food expenditures by enabling families to prepare meals at home more affordably. This is particularly significant as the cost of living rises, making it imperative for households to find cost-effective ways to maintain healthy eating habits without sacrificing quality or taste. According to market research firm Statista, the revenue in the UK air fryers market amounts to €142.9 million in 2024, with an expected annual growth rate of 10.62% from 2024 to 2029. Market response Manufacturers have shown a strong response to this trend, offering a wide range of air fryer models that cater to diverse needs and budgets. From compact units for small kitchens to advanced models with multiple cooking functions, a plethora of options are now available. For instance, Philips has continued to innovate with its latest model, launched in April, the Philips Airfryer 3000 Series Dual Basket. This unit allows users to time two dishes simultaneously, ensuring dishes are ‘crisp, tender and evenly cooked’ using its RapidAir Technology. Ninja, a UK-based company known for its kitchen appliances, recently introduced the Ninja Double Stack XL air fryer. This model features a narrower but taller design compared to typical air fryers and grills. It occupies 30% less space, yet boasts a 9.5-litre capacity that can accommodate up to eight people. Meanwhile, Gourmia announced the launch of an all-in-one air fryer, grill, panini maker and multicooker. Versia, with its 14 one-touch cooking functions, was designed to revolutionise meal preparation for busy cooks. In addition, the growing popularity of air fryers is carving out a new consumption space within the food and beverage market. Cookbooks and magazines dedicated to air frying are also becoming common, with entire publications focused on air fryer recipes, tips and trends. Moreover, the trend has expanded to the entertainment industry with a new TV series dedicated to air fryers. English celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, in collaboration with French cookware manufacturer Tefal, has launched a show – called Jamie’s Air-Fryer Meals – demonstrating easy and effective ways to maximise the use of this appliance. Innovations and product development This year has seen the introduction of several new ranges from popular food brands, specially designed to align with this trend. Many are now offering pre-packaged, air-fryer-friendly foods, including frozen items that are pre-seasoned and portioned for optimal air frying results. Swiss food and beverage giant Nestlé has developed a range of products specifically for the air fryer. Available in three varieties – double cheddar steak, grilled chicken parmesan and cheddar bacon tomato – Nestlé's Stouffer’s brand has released the Melt-Fulls frozen sandwiches, which are made with real cheese and Italian bread. In April, McCain Foods partnered with Ninja to launch a new product line tailored for air fryers, debuting with two initial offerings. The line-up features McCain’s popular items, including Deep Ridge Crinkle Fries and French Fries, promising cooking times of under eight minutes for ‘maximum crispiness’. UK-based food brand MJ’s Diner has also unveiled a new range of frozen ready meals tailored for air fryers. The line-up includes 14 meal options designed to provide a convenient 'fakeaway' experience, including salt and pepper chicken, katsu chicken curry, kebab, steak pie and sausages, and chips and gravy, all of which cook in less than 20 minutes. In addition to product development, companies are investing in social media platforms to promote their products. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest have fueled the surge in air fryer popularity. Users share innovative recipes, cooking tips and photos of air-fried dishes, inspiring others to try new creations. For example, TikTok creators often showcase their air fryer recipes, turning ordinary meals into visually appealing and appetising content. Hashtags like #AirFryerRecipes and #AirFryerMeals have garnered thousands of views, featuring a variety of innovative dishes, with air fryer fans sharing recipes for salmon fillets with a crisp exterior, mozzarella sticks with gooey cheese, air-fried doughnuts bites, crispy tofu cubes and many more. From a whole roast dinner to lobster tails, some of the craziest air fryer recipes have been pushing culinary boundaries. For instance, air-fried sushi rolls combine the freshness of sushi with a crunchy exterior, while air-fried hard-boiled eggs bring together the familiar tenderness of a boiled egg with a surprisingly crispy coating. The rise of air fryers has demonstrated a big change in what people want: healthier and easier ways to cook. As companies continue to innovate and cater to this growing market, air fryers are likely to become an integral part of the modern kitchen. #Airfryers

  • FrieslandCampina dairy farmers earn €245m in sustainability premiums

Dairy cooperative FrieslandCampina said on Monday that its member farmers have received over €245 million in premiums for their sustainability achievements in 2023, as the company continues to drive progress towards its climate goals. Of the total premiums, around €190 million was paid through the cooperative's 'Foqus planet Sustainable development' incentive system, while over €55 million was awarded for participation in specialised milk flows such as organic and 'On the way to PlanetProof'. The average premium paid to FrieslandCampina's dairy farmer members amounted to €2.63 per 100kg of farm milk. Cor Hoogeveen, executive board member of the dairy cooperative, said: "In 2023, under the name 'Foqus planet Sustainable development,' we launched a new system for the payment of our sustainability bonuses. This is the first round of payments according to the new system." The Foqus planet premium is partly funded by the company, partly by customers paying for sustainability efforts and partly by the member dairy farmers themselves through a cooperative deposit. "More and more customers of FrieslandCampina are setting specific climate goals," Mireille Einwachter, chief sustainability officer at FrieslandCampina commented. "We are a partner for them in fulfilling those goals." The 'Foqus planet sustainable development' programme rewards dairy farmers across nine sustainability indicators covering animal health, climate, biodiversity and grazing, with the maximum premium at €3.50 per 100kg of milk. FrieslandCampina says it will continue to organise climate workshops for its members and has developed an online tool to calculate the impact of sustainability measures on farms. The company is also working with various parties to promote innovations that can reduce the environmental impact. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions at member dairy farms is an integral part of FrieslandCampina's Climate Plan, with the total emission reduction results for 2023 to be published in July. Team work: Mars-FrieslandCampina Sustainable Dairy Development Program Mars Incorporated   also recently unveiled an ambitious sustainable dairy plan named ' Moo'ving Dairy Forward ,' accompanied by a substantial $47 million investment over three years. One highlight of the initiative is the collaboration with dairy cooperative FrieslandCampina , one of the world's largest dairy producers. Together, they will establish the Mars-FrieslandCampina Sustainable Dairy Development Program, dedicated to implementing sustainable practices across Mars' dairy supply chain. The programme sets out to address the pressing need for sustainable agricultural practices, starting with a comprehensive strategy to reduce the carbon footprint of dairy farming. Key measures include implementing innovative technologies and practices designed to lower greenhouse gas emissions, promoting biodiversity and ensuring efficient water usage and management. Economic sustainability is another cornerstone of the programme. By focusing on fair pricing and income stability for dairy farmers, the initiative seeks to bolster the economic health of farming communities. Improved farm productivity through better practices and access to advanced technology will further enhance the viability of dairy farming. Additionally, the programme aims to open new market opportunities for farmers, ensuring they can benefit from a more robust value chain. Social responsibility plays a crucial role in the Mars-FrieslandCampina Sustainable Dairy Development Program. Ensuring safe and fair working conditions on dairy farms is a priority, alongside supporting local communities through initiatives in education, healthcare and infrastructure development. The programme also includes comprehensive training and education for farmers, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to adopt sustainable practices and improve their business operations. #FrieslandCampina #Dairyfarmers #milk #sustainability
