Meat giant JBS has acquired 50% of the control of South American egg producer, Mantiqueira Brasil, marking its entry into a new protein segment.
Mantiqueira Brasil produces 4 billion eggs per year, and is the largest egg producer in South America and the tenth largest globally.
It has units in six states in Brazil and employs 3,000 people. The company has made significant investments in its portfolio in recent years, with its brands including the free-range Happy Eggs and organic Fazenda da Toca.
The acquisition of Mantiqueira will bolster and diversify JBS’ protein platform and provide a global opportunity for the company. Mantiqueira Brasil already exports to South America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Control of the egg producer will be share with its founder and chairman of the board, Leandro Pinto.
Pinto commented: “We are leaders in Brazil and, with the arrival of JBS, we will have greater access to market opportunities, in addition to obtaining the necessary knowledge to become a relevant competitor outside the country”.
“This union is a milestone in our strategic planning, which has always sought, in addition to organic expansion, entry into new markets.”
The merger of the two companies will also benefit from JBS’s 15 years of experience in poultry farming. The company is the largest chicken producer globally, with operations in this sector in the US, Mexico, Europe and Brazil.
Gilberto Tomazoni, global CEO of JBS, said: “This investment is in line with our long-term strategy, which includes diversifying our portfolio by entering new protein segments and investing in branded businesses with added value”.
JBS currently operates in beef, chicken, pork, aquaculture (salmon) and alternative proteins (plant-based and cultivated) on five continents.
