Opinion: Bringing awareness to allergy-friendly needs in the candy industry

Opinion: Bringing awareness to allergy-friendly needs in the candy industry
With a growing global population affected by allergies, the demand for safe, allergen-free food options is reshaping the confectionery industry. Steve Van Tassel, CEO of YumEarth, explores the challenges and opportunities in creating indulgent yet inclusive candy that balances safety, taste and quality, while meeting the evolving needs of allergy-conscious consumers.

One in four US consumers is affected by allergies, creating a lucrative and rapidly growing market for allergen-free and inclusive food options. This surge in demand has driven significant changes in the food industry, particularly in the candy sector, where consumers seek indulgent treats that cater to specific dietary needs without compromising on taste or quality.

While some brands have successfully introduced allergy-friendly products, manufacturers still face the challenge of delivering better-for-you alternatives that maintain the indulgent experience consumers expect. The need for innovation in this space remains strong, offering opportunities for manufacturers to differentiate their offerings, capture new market segments and build consumer loyalty.

The growing need for allergy-friendly options

Food allergies, particularly among children, have become a critical concern. Over the past few decades, their prevalence has surged, with nut allergies among the most common. This rise has prompted sweeping changes in everyday environments, from implementing nut-free policies in schools to ensuring the safety of allergic students.

Beyond the classroom, heightened awareness is driving growth in the broader better-for-you and inclusive food movements. Parents and caregivers are now seeking products that meet allergen-free standards while also offering organic, non-GMO and clean label certifications. For manufacturers, this shift underscores the importance of prioritising transparency, safety, and nutrition to meet these evolving consumer demands.

Bridging the gap between safety and indulgence

Candy has long been associated with joy and celebration, making it an emotional and nostalgic purchase for many consumers. Holidays like Halloween, Easter and Valentine’s Day amplify these connections but also highlight the challenges of catering to diverse dietary needs.

Some brands have successfully addressed this balance:

YumEarth, a brand in the allergen-free confectionery space, offers organic lollipops, gummy bears and seasonal treats free from major allergens like nuts, dairy and gluten, while maintaining bold flavours and fun packaging.

Free2b Foods has gained popularity for its Sun Cups, a nut-free alternative to traditional peanut butter cups, made with sunflower butter and free from the top 12 allergens.

Enjoy Life Foods, known for its range of allergen-friendly chocolate bars, cookies and baking chocolate, focuses on clean label ingredients and transparency, earning the trust of allergy-conscious consumers.

Creating allergy-friendly candy goes beyond excluding harmful ingredients – it’s about maintaining the taste, texture and indulgent experience consumers expect. Innovating to achieve this balance presents an opportunity for manufacturers to lead the way in reimagining confectionery as both safe and luxurious.

Retailers have taken notice, dedicating more shelf space to allergen-free brands and introducing dedicated sections online. Seasonal offerings, in particular, have demonstrated strong sales, with products crafted for holidays like Christmas, Halloween and Valentine’s Day tapping into the emotional resonance of festive celebrations.

The future for allergy-friendly candy

The allergy-friendly confectionery segment is poised for continued growth, offering manufacturers a unique opportunity to drive inclusivity while addressing a pressing consumer need. By investing in innovation, prioritising clean-label practices, and embracing seasonal and year-round offerings, brands can position themselves as leaders in this transformative market.

As the candy industry evolves, manufacturers have the chance to create products that bring joy to families navigating dietary restrictions, ensuring that everyone can indulge in life’s sweet moments. The allergen-free movement isn’t just about meeting a need – it’s about reshaping the industry to be more inclusive and delicious than ever before.
