Cargill expands cocoa production in Indonesia to cater to growing Asian market

Cargill expands cocoa production in Indonesia to cater to growing Asian market

Cargill has launched a new cocoa production line at its processing plant in Gresik, Indonesia, aimed at meeting the rising demand for indulgent food and beverages across Asia.

This expansion is part of the company’s strategy to enhance its competitive edge in the bakery, ice cream and chocolate confectionery segments, as well as café-style beverages in foodservice.

Francesca Kleemans, managing director of Cargill’s food solutions Southeast Asia, said: “Cargill expects high growth in these indulgence categories in coming years, driven by consumer demand for multi-sensorial experiences, healthy indulgence and conscious consumption”.

According to Cargill’s proprietary TrendTracker study for 2024, there is a notable shift among APAC consumers towards novelty and experimentation in food, with an increasing focus on holistic health.

The new production line will allow for greater customisation, enabling the creation of cocoa powders and liquors with distinct flavour profiles tailored to diverse consumer preferences in the region.

Kleemans highlighted the strategic importance of this investment, particularly in light of ongoing global supply chain challenges. “Our new capabilities in Gresik will help reset industry standards for cocoa and chocolate innovation, allowing us to co-create with our customers in Asia,” she said.

The initiative aligns with Cargill’s 'Asia for Asia' solutions, designed to enhance availability and competitiveness for local manufacturers.

To mark the launch, Cargill introduced two new dark Gerkens cocoa powders and a range of Cargill Craft cocoa liquors, showcasing deep colour hues and premium flavours.

The Gerkens Max80 and Max78 cocoa powders offer rich chocolatey notes, while the Craft liquors present a spectrum of flavours from tropical fruity to bittersweet chocolate.

Cargill has been increasingly positioning itself as a key partner for food manufacturers, foodservice and retail sectors, bolstered by its extensive supply chain expertise.

The Gresik facility, a crucial hub for cocoa innovation in Asia, also houses the recently opened Cargill Cocoa Development Centre, enhancing the company’s ability to deliver comprehensive solutions across its product portfolio.

With 16 production sites and innovation facilities across the region, Cargill continues to strengthen its capabilities to provide 'Asia for Asia' solutions.
