Parker Bioscience Filtration launches filter for sterile gas filtration in food and beverage

Parker Bioscience Filtration, a division of Parker Hannifin, has introduced a new range of sterilising-grade gas filters designed to increase microbial security and reduce operational costs for the food and beverage industry.

The company's Asept-X2 filters feature a unique hydrophobic and hydrophilic construction that enables them to withstand elevated temperatures without the need for condensate management.

"This improved resistance to liquid blinding allows the Asept-X2 to operate within exposure to bulk condensate, which is common in complex piping and large automated systems," said Mark Richardson, processing product manager at Parker Bioscience Filtration.

The combination of hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties in the sterile gas filter enables it to handle bulk condensate by allowing aqueous flow through the hydrophilic membrane. This addresses a significant issue for traditional hydrophobic PTFE membrane filters that can become blinded when exposed to condensate.

Parker says the Asept-X2 can operate effectively when exposed to gas and air with high vapour content, making it suitable for applications such as off-gas sterilisation in industrial fermentation processes.

The filters have been validated to withstand 150 Steam-in-Place (SIP) cycles in forward and reverse directions, with a maximum continuous operating temperature of 70°C and the ability to withstand aggressive differential pressures of up to 1.5 bar at 140°C.

"The extended service life offered by the ASEPT-X2 filter range can help food and beverage manufacturers and processing and packaging operations reduce consumable spend and improve efficiency, as filters will be replaced less frequently," Richardson added.

Asept-X2 is fully validated for bacterial, spore and bacteriophage retention, reducing the risk of contamination due to filter failure.

The new filter joins Parker Bioscience Filtration's range of solutions used in Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) regimes of food and beverage facilities, including High Flow Bio-X sterile gas filters and High Flow Tetpor II sterilising grade filters.
