- Arla enters the plant-based market by launching Jörd brand
Dairy co-operative Arla has entered the plant-based market with the release of three dairy alternative products under a new brand called Jörd, which will be Arla's umbrella brand for plant-based products. The first three products released through the Jörd brand – Jörd Oat, Jörd Barley and Jörd Hemp – are all dairy-free oat drinks, which are made using "only four or five ingredients", according to Arla. Jörd's plant-based oat drinks will be initially be launched in Denmark, the UK and Sweden, and Arla says it will investigate opportunities to launch Jörd in other markets in the near future. The demand for plant-based and dairy-free products has risen significantly in recent times, as increasing numbers of consumers are adopting vegan diets or attempting to reduce their consumption of animal products. Indeed, research published by The Good Food Institute and the Plant Based Foods Association yesterday found that retail sales of plant-based foods in the US grew 11% in 2019, bringing the total value of the plant-based market to $5 billion. Many major dairy companies including Danone, Kerry and Upfield have made moves to strengthen their presence in the plant-based sector as this trend has grown, and now Arla says that the launch of the Jörd brand shows that the company has a "strong ambition to become a significant player" in the plant-based space within the coming years. Hanne Søndergaard, executive vice-president for global marketing and innovation in Arla, said: "More and more European consumers are looking towards plant-based products. And we know that consumers are enjoying dairy and plant-based drinks side by side. "With our unique expertise and innovation power it is natural for us to enter this market, which is adjacent to the milk category. We aim to develop the category with a natural, Nordic range that fits into the everyday life of the European consumers and we see this as an exciting business opportunity. “At Arla, we are committed to deliver in the plant-based category. We have the willingness and the capability to serve what the consumers desire – both in the dairy and plant-based categories – and we believe that the Jörd-brand and our natural oat drinks meet these expectations. "The three plant-drinks are made with organic and Nordic ingredients and contain up to 50% more oat than current market leaders. Parameters, that have tested very well with the consumers."

- Carabao introduces new Mixed Berry energy drink
Thai energy drink brand Carabao is adding a new Mixed Berry flavour to its range of low-calorie energy drinks for the UK market. The new flavour has responded to consumer research and will add to Carabao’s portfolio that includes Green Apple and Mandarin Orange. According to the company, it recognised clear opportunity for a berry flavoured energy drink as it is well known as a soft drink flavour but currently under-represented in the energy drink sector. At 63 calories per can, Carabao Mixed Berry reportedly contains a sugar content far lower than major competitors and offers the benefits of a caffeinated energy drink. With its new flavour, the brand believes it has provided a unique alternative to conventional energy drinks. David Butcher, manager director of Carabao UK & Ireland, said: “The launch of our Mixed Berry flavour is a standout moment in our mission to create energy drinks that rival the much-loved taste of traditional soft drinks. We’re excited to see how this new product fulfils Carabao’s ambition to grow further within the UK energy drinks market.” Earlier this year, Carabao Energy Drinks announced that it has moved its production base from Refresco in the Netherlands to Thailand, where the company originates from, as part of its 2020 growth strategy. The new flavour will be amongst the first cans manufactured in the new facility. In its third year of partnership with the EFL, Carabao Mixed Berry will initially be unveiled on 1 March at Wembley Stadium during the Carabao Cup final. Carabao Mixed Berry will launch in Asda from 14 March 2020 with a further roll out planned in other retailers from 23 March 2020. The drink will be available for an RRP of £1.19.
- Mondelēz International to acquire in-store bakery company Give & Go
Mondelēz International has agreed to acquire a majority interest in North American bakery firm Give & Go, in a move to broaden its position in snacking. The owner of Cadbury and Oreo will purchase the sweet baked goods company from Thomas H. Lee Partners (THL) for an undisclosed sum. Founded in 1989, Give & Go provides fully finished sweet baked goods to retailers’ in-store bakery sections across North America. According to Mondelēz, Give & Go reported net revenues of approximately $500 million in 2019. As a result of the deal, Mondelēz will expand its position in broader snacking and be able to access the in-store bakery channel. Give & Go’s portfolio includes a range of brownies, tarts and cupcakes under its Two-Bite brand, as well as the Create-A-Treat brand, known for cookie and gingerbread house decorating kits. These products will join Mondelēz’ portfolio of global and local brands such as Oreo, Cadbury, Milka and belVita as well as Tate’s Bake Shop and Perfect Snacks. “Our ambition is to lead the future of snacking by offering consumers a broad range of snacks in key growth channels and categories," said Glen Walter, executive vice president and president, North America, for Mondelēz International. Walter added: "Give & Go’s leading position in the large and fast-growing in-store bakery channel gives us a unique opportunity to expand into new, on-trend consumer spaces.” Last year, Mondelēz secured a deal to acquire a majority interest in Perfect Snacks , a US maker of refrigerated nutrition bars. “Similar to our recent acquisitions of Perfect Snacks and Tate’s Bake Shop, this is yet another great example of our bolt-on acquisition strategy to establish foundations in faster growing snacking adjacencies,” said Walter. In an official press statement, Mondelēz said it will operate Give & Go separately in order to nurture its innovative and entrepreneurial spirit while providing access to consumer and channel insights, procurement and marketing resources to accelerate growth. Following closure of the deal, the current Give & Go management team will retain a minority interest in the company and continue to run the business from their existing headquarters. All Give & Go products will continue to be made at their current manufacturing locations. The transaction, subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2020.
- Spiced rum brand Dead Man’s Fingers debuts pineapple flavour
Halewood Wines & Spirits-owned spiced rum brand Dead Man’s Fingers has launched a pineapple-flavoured variant. With an ABV of 37.5%, the spirit is said to feature hints of sweetness from roasted and candied pineapple, soft brown sugar and nutmeg. Halewood, which acquired the brand in 2018, said the new variant taps into “booming cocktail trends”. “Consumers want fresh, contemporary tastes and diversity in flavours,” said Lucy Cottrell, brand manager for rum at Halewood Wines & Spirits. “This has caused decline in some of the more traditional spirit categories like white rum and is leading to a whole new generation of adventurous and artisanal drinkers who are now looking to other categories for something more exciting to try. “This is why we’re seeing massive growth in Dead Man’s Fingers. We’re meeting demand for innovative flavours, which are packaged in boldly designed bottles that stand out from the crowd.” Other rum variants in the Dead Man’s Fingers range include coconut, hemp, and coffee. The brand posted a 574% sales volume increase last year. Cottrell added: “Whilst our extended flavoured rum range now accounts for a growing and significant share of total sales for the brand, the addition of pineapple will drive further intrigue towards the rum category." The pineapple rum is now available with a recommended retail price of £22 for a 70cl bottle. Last month, Halewood secured a deal to acquire a 48% share in Polish spirits brand Vestal Vodka. Other brands in the Halewood portfolio include Bajan Rum Sixty Six, Gelston’s Irish Whiskey and Crabbie Whisky.
- Pladis launches pineapple-flavoured Jaffa Cakes in the UK
Pladis UK&I is expanding its Jaffa Cakes range in the UK with the introduction of a new pineapple-flavoured variant. McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes Pineapple will feature the brand's signature light sponge coated in delicious milk and dark chocolate with a new pineapple centre, providing a "tropical twist". The release follows the successful introduction of Pineapple-flavoured Jaffa Cakes cake bars in the UK last year, and seeks to capitalise on the growing demand for 'playful, contemporary flavours' among younger consumers. The brand has released a range of new formats and flavours across the Jaffa Cakes range in recent times, as aims to reach new consumers and new snacking occasions. This included the release of Jaffa Cakes Nibbles in January 2019, a product line aimed at consumers who were looking for on-the-go snacking options. Emma Stowers, brand director for McVitie’s at Pladis UK&I said: “McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes Pineapple will offer consumers a trendy twist on the much-loved classic. “McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes are already a store-cupboard staple for almost a third (31%) of UK households, with over 1 billion devoured each year. "We want to encourage even more shoppers to get behind the brand, and we’re confident that the launch of McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes Pineapple will help the brand appeal both to a new generation of consumers and existing Jaffa Cakes fans seeking something a little bit different.” McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes Pineapple will be available nationwide from major UK retailers from February 2020.

- Mondelēz boosted by emerging markets performance in 2019
Mondelēz International delivered organic net revenue growth of 4.1% last year as it was helped by its performance in emerging markets. The owner of Cadbury and Oreo recorded net revenue of $25.87 billion in 2019. Net earnings attributable to the company increased to $3.87 billion. The company’s Asia, Middle East and Africa unit increased revenue by 5.3% last year, driven by double-digit growth in India and high single-digit growth in China. In a conference call with investors, Mondelēz CEO Dirk Van de Put said developed markets “showed robust growth”, with both Europe and North America “performing well”. Last year, Mondelēz acquired a majority interest in Perfect Snacks, a US maker of refrigerated nutrition bars. "2019 was a major step forward for the company: execution of our strategy, including investments in global and local brands, enabled us to deliver strong top-line performance and to meet or exceed all of our financial targets,” said Van de Put. "We are increasingly confident that our incremental investments in brands and capabilities, emphasis on volume leverage and profit dollar growth will create a virtuous cycle that consistently delivers attractive top- and bottom-line growth and sustained free cash flow generation.” However, Van de Put warned that the company’s first-quarter revenue of this year will be impacted by the coronavirus spreading across China – a country that accounts for 4.5% of its total sales. Chinese authorities have asked Mondelēz to keep two of its factories closed in the country for ten days to reduce the risk of infection. For 2020, Mondelēz expects organic sales growth of 3% and high single-digit EPS growth.
