- Ben & Jerry’s launches new kind of cool
US ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s is introducing a cleaner, greener freezer for testing in the US, with the hope that it will eventually be approved for long-term use. The company announced the launch of a pilot project testing hydrocarbon-based freezers, which present great environmental benefits by minimising the freezer’s impact on global warming. For years, the Vermont ice cream maker has pursued alternatives to greener freezers. The company feels the time is right for a new kind of cool, though getting to this point hasn’t been easy. “This is an important step for our business which we hope will clearly demonstrate that a more environmentally friendly refrigeration technology can work in the US market,” said Ben & Jerry’s CEO, Walt Freese. “The technology is commonplace in Europe with literally millions of home and commercial units in place.” “We’ve been working on getting better refrigeration technology into our distribution networks in the US since 2001, and more specifically on hyrdrocarbon freezing for the past year,” said engineer Pete Gosselin. For now, the efforts from the team – including Ben & Jerry’s, Unilever, Greenpeace and others – can claim moderate success with approximately 50 freezers this autumn, with approval to test up to 2,000 freezers over the next few years. “This climate-safe freezer will keep pints of Chunky Monkey and Cherry Garcia as cold as ever, but it's also going to help cool our planet,” said Greenpeace USA Executive Director, John Passacantando. “With hurricanes intensifying, tropical disease spreading, sea levels rising, and polar bears going extinct, we need to make sure that what cools our ice cream, drinks and homes isn’t also melting the ice caps.” The freezer green team launched the kick-off to the programme in Washington DC at the Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop in Georgetown, with Ben & Jerry’s co-founders, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, and CEO Walt Freese, Greenpeace USA ED John Passacantando and Solutions Director Amy Larkin as well as Unilever Global Project Leader Alan Gerrard, who has championed the placement of the same freezers throughout the world. The technology is currently allowed in every country except the US.

- Tetra Pak celebrates World School Milk Day
*On the occasion of World School Milk Day, Tetra Pak, in collaboration with sister company De Laval, announced that it will provide practical support to three additional school feeding programmes in Haiti, Colombia and Venezuela and expand existing activities in Russia and India. * Tetra Pak now partners with host governments and non-governmental organisations in 52 countries to provide milk and other nutritious drinks to more than 45 million children worldwide – including 22 million in developing countries, an increase from 17 million in 2006. Tetra Pak's involvement in ongoing feeding programmes includes support of India's first large-scale school milk programme, launched in November 2007 by the Municipal Corporation of the Mumbai City, targeting 1,200 schools and 450,000 children. The Russian school milk programme supported by Tetra Pak and now in its fifth year, is also expected to expand in 2009 to include six new regions and approximately 400,000 new participants. "Tetra Pak's support of school milk programmes as well as agricultural and dairy development programmes around the world, are an important part of our corporate commitment to making food safe and available everywhere," said Ulla Holm, Global Director, Tetra Pak Food for Development Office. "They're also a key element of our business strategy and commitment to Tetra Pak dairy customers around the world. This is because school feeding and other dairy development programmes, in addition to improving the health and learning capacities of the children, often act as a catalyst for agricultural and economic development," said Holm. New in 2008 The new school milk programme in Haiti, funded by the World Bank and managed by the Catholic Relief Services, was launched in May 2008. Initially, it will cover 10,000 children, predominantly in the Cité de Soleil district of the capital Porte-au-Prince. Tetra Pak has conducted a technical assessment of the Colombia School Feeding Programme and will assist with the programme implementation. In Venezuela, Tetra Pak is cooperating with the Corporación Venezolana Agraria (CVA) on a School Feeding Programme using a fortified soya chocolate-flavoured beverage based on locally grown soy beans. The first phase of the programme is planned to start in November 2008 and will reach 64,000 children throughout the school year.

- Tate & Lyle loses patent infringement case
Chinese Sucralose manufacturer Guangdong Food Industry Institute has been cleared of the infringement complaint put forward by Tate & Lyle to the US International Trade Commission (ITC). The complaint alleges infringement of process patents relating to the production of Sucralose and certain intermediate compounds. This initial determination was presented by the US ITC 22 September 2008. Wang Sanyong, a Corporate Officer of Guangdong Food Industry Institute, said: “We are extremely pleased with the determination of Judge Bullock of the ITC ... We have been open and forthcoming in presenting the facts to the ITC as fully and completely as possible. "It would be recalled that one of the patents asserted by T&L was dropped before the hearing commenced and after an inspection of our facility. T&L’s expert acknowledged that GDFII/L&P Food’s current process, as inspected, does not infringe two of the other patents. The fourth asserted patent expires in July 2009, only a few months after the new target date for the ITC’s final determination. "We are confident that the final determination will indeed mirror this initial determination and are looking forward to this determination by the ITC in January 2009." "This has been a long process, but this historic determination is a great milestone for us as we move in the right direction to being vindicated in this complaint and to proceed in our global strategic plans for our Züeit-branded, high intensity Sucralose sweetener," added Roger Matkin, CEO of Ingredient Specialties, Inc (ISI), a California-based strategic global alliance partner. Director of sales and marketing of ingredient specialties, Bassam Faress, said: “We believe in intellectual property and the necessity for enforcement. Unfortunately, this is one of those instances where the exercising of this right is misplaced.”
- Sidel offers Spumador growing flexibility
*A producer and bottler of its own brands of mineral water and beverages, Italian Spumador also offers packaging solutions to major international brands for an array of non-alcoholic beverages packaged in a wide variety of PET and glass packages. * The company is now actively pursuing its growth strategy through the addition of a new aseptic packaging line from Sidel. “We anticipated that we would need a facility able to handle a large number of products," said Tullio Tiozzo, Spumador Operations Director. "This new line was designed to achieve extreme flexibility and speed in format changeovers while maintaining all the high quality standards that are fundamental to aseptic lines. And we really do seem to have reached this objective.” Flexibility This new aseptic line from Sidel has already been operating at the Sant’Andrea Bagni facility, producing 24,000 bottles an hour in seven different formats, ranging from 0.1-litre up to 2-litre. The key to its flexibility is the Sensofill FMa filler. Spumador is the first manufacturer to use this aseptic filler especially designed to accommodate a wide variety of production runs. Product and format changeovers can be performed without loss of sterility, which facilitates overall operations. The Sensofill FMa also reduces losses during product changeovers, and cuts down water and APA consumption. This new aseptic line is used to package still and neutral pH beverages in PET bottles. Such products include sports supplements, iced teas, dairy- or soy-based beverages, 100% pure juices, fruit juice-based beverages with pulp, and beverages that are enriched with vitamins and other nutrients. As for package flexibility, the line produces bottles with flat or sport caps in multi-layer PET and single layer PET with barrier coating, produced with reel-fed labels, wrap-around labels, transparent or customised heat shrink labels.
